Sutton’s, a longtime Italian restaurant in Lexington, has closed after owner Gordon Lewis decided to retire.

The restaurant’s final day serving the public was Saturday, October 24, according to the family’s announcement.

The closing ends a run of nearly two decades and leaves behind countless meals, celebrations and memories for regular customers.

Lewis said he was grateful to the staff, family members and patrons who supported the business over the years.

His daughter Sutton, whose name the restaurant carried, shared how closely the business was tied to her childhood.

For local diners, the news is more than a change on a restaurant directory.

Independent establishments often become familiar gathering places, where families mark milestones and customers come to recognize staff by name.

Sutton’s also adapted during the pandemic, including its early work with alcoholic beverage delivery in Kentucky.

That history illustrates how much the business environment can change during a restaurant’s lifetime.

Owner retirement is a personal milestone, but the loss of a familiar dining room can be felt across the community.

Residents hoping to revisit Sutton’s should know the restaurant has already closed, not merely announced a future departure.

A Lexington dining chapter has come to an end.
